Unit 9 - Hotel entertainment

1. What kind of entertainment would you expect to have at a city centre hotel? a luxury beach resort? a small rural hotel?

2. What kind of entertainment can you offer for a group of young children? Young couples? retired people?

3. What are the qualities and skills of a perfect worker? Which of these qualities and skills do you have?

4. Can you make arts and crafts objects for children? What can you make? How can you make it?

5. Watch the video of this 7-star hotel. What is unique about it? What kind of entertainment does it offer?



Unit 8 - On tour

1. Have you ever been on a coach tour or guided tour that you have really enjoyed? Where was it? What did you see? What made the tour successful?

2. Read the interview to Lucy Tovchikh on page 70. What does she do? Where does she work? What does she like the most about her job? What does she dislike about it? WOuld you like to have the same job as Lucy? Why?

3. Read the Standards of Performance on page 71. Which of the standards do you think are REALLY IMPORTANT for a tour guide in Peru? Which do you think are not very important? Why?

4. Imagine you on a coach with a group of 20 tourist and the coach breaks down. What would you do? What would you tell the tourists?

5. Watch the video of a guided tour of Paris. What information do you find interesting? What attactions are shown?

Unit 7 - Attractions and events

1. What is the most interesting tourist attraction you have visited? Why was it interesting?

2. What do you think are the best tourist attractions / festivals in your country? Why? Describe at least ONE attraction and ONE festival.

3. How can the people who work at tourist attractions adapt to meet the cultural differences of certain nationalities?

4. Have you ever met a curator / lifeguard / ranger / interpreter? What does this person do? What is the purpose of having activity sheets / animatronics / waxworks at an attraction? Do you think it gets the attention of tourists?

5. Watch the video of the The World's Top 10 Most Beautiful Cities. Choose one destination. What attractions can you find there? Which of these cities would you like to visit?

UNIT 6 - RURAL TOURISM

1. What is rural tourism? How would you define it? What are some features of rural tourism?

2. Watch this video about a tour operator that offers rural tourism services in Peru. What services does the tour operator offer to the tourists? How would you grade the rural accommodation shown in the video? What activities can the tourists do?

 

3. Have you ever gone camping? If so, did you stay at a campsite? What features did the campsite have? (Look at page 47)

4. Which of  the resources on page 48 have you had any experience of? Which ones would you like to experience / see? Which of these can you find in Peru?

UNIT 5 - EATING OUT

1. Watch this short documentary on Peruvian Food. What can you see in the video? What Peruvian dishes are shown? What does Gastón Acurio say about Peruvian food? What is something interesting you learned from the video?

2. When you are on holiday, do you to try the local food? What's the nicest meal you've had as a tourist? What's the strangest food you've eaten on holiday?


3. Choose a city in Peru and write about its most representative dish. What are the ingredients? How can you describe it to a a customer in a restaurant?


4. What do you say to guests at a dinner table before they start eating? (There are three possibilities) What do you say in English before you drink something?

UNIT 4 - Holiday Rep




1. Watch the video of TUI Travel. These people describe their job as travel/holiday reps. What do you find interesting aboiut their daily activities? What kind of things do they have to do daily? Would you like to have this job? Why or why not?


2. What are the most common health problems that tourist have when they are on holiday? (Mention at least two)What can the holiday rep do to help?


3. Look at the Customer Care advice on PAGE 33. In your opinion, what is the most important thing you should ALWAYS do? Why? What is something you should NEVER do? Explain your answer.


4. Make a list of people who you might give a tip to in Peru. Check on the Internet to see if there is any advice on "How to tip in Peru." How much should one tip in Peru? Who should we not tip?

UNIT 3 - Tourist Information Services


1. Watch the video of Manchester's New Tourist Information Centre. What did you learn about this information centre? Is there anything that you find interesting? Compare this TIC to the ones you have visited here in Peru.

2. As Tourist Service Manager you will have to deal with different types of clients. According to the description on Page 21 (Assessing customer types). Which type of custemer is the easiest to work with? Which one is the most difficult?

3. Have you ever had to find information on tourist attractions and services? Where can you obtain this information?

4. Read the text about Liverpool on pages 24 -25 in your textbook. Mention two things you learned about Liverpool. Would you like to visit this destination? Why or why not?

Unit 1 - Cultural Differences in Greetings

It is my pleasure to be your teacher this semester. This blog will serve as a way to discuss some topics related to tourism and to further our class discussions too.
